Getting started
Beginner or Professional — which should I pick?
Beginner covers the panel and unlocks it one module at a time in 25 guided steps, each with a short explanation, an animated sound demo and a “Try it” task. Professional opens every module right away.
You can switch at any time: open Settings and use Start guided intro (Beginner), Restart guided intro or Unlock everything (Professional).
How do I get an explanation back after the intro?
Long-press any knob, button or display for a moment (on Mac: right-click). Its explanation and key facts open again.
Can I play without a MIDI controller?
Yes. Open the on-screen keyboard from the keyboard button on the panel. With a hardware keyboard (Magic Keyboard on iPad, or your Mac keyboard) the bottom letter row plays the white keys and the row above the black keys, starting at Z (Y on German layouts). Shift octaves with − / + on the on-screen keyboard, or ⌘↑ / ⌘↓ on Mac.
MIDI
Everything MIDI is set up in Settings (the SETTINGS button on the panel, or ⌘, on Mac).
Connecting the OP-1 Field or another USB controller
Connect it with a USB-C cable (use a USB-C adapter on older devices). Class-compliant USB MIDI devices connect automatically and appear under MIDI Inputs. Use the switch next to a device to ignore it.
OP-SYNTH listens on all 16 MIDI channels and responds to notes with velocity, pitch bend, the mod wheel (CC 1), the sustain pedal (CC 64) and aftertouch (channel and poly pressure).
Pairing a Bluetooth MIDI controller
iPhone and iPad: Settings → Pair Bluetooth MIDI…, then pick your controller from the list. Allow Bluetooth access when asked.
Mac: pair it once in Audio MIDI Setup (Window › Show MIDI Studio › Bluetooth). It then shows up under MIDI Inputs.
Using Network MIDI
Turn on Network MIDI in Settings and allow local network access when asked. OP-SYNTH then accepts MIDI sessions from other devices on the same Wi-Fi (for example a Mac running Audio MIDI Setup › Network). It is off by default.
Mapping my controller's knobs (MIDI learn)
- Open Settings → MIDI Control → Add mapping…
- Pick a parameter — any knob, switch, effect, Hold or the arpeggiator.
- Move a knob or press a button on your controller. Done.
Mappings are stored per CC and channel. Remove one with its delete button, or use Clear all mappings.
Does OP-SYNTH follow MIDI clock?
Yes. Incoming MIDI clock (for example from the OP-1 Field) sets the tempo for the arpeggiator, the sequencer and the tempo-synced delay. OP-SYNTH does not send MIDI.
Audio
I hear nothing / the sound comes out of the wrong device
When the OP-1 Field is connected, iPhone and iPad route audio to it over USB automatically — the sound then plays from the Field's speaker or headphone output. Open Settings → Audio Output → Choose output… to switch to the device speaker or headphones.
On Mac, OP-SYNTH plays through the macOS output device: System Settings › Sound › Output.
Still silent? Check that VCO 1 or VCO 2 isn't muted, that Volume isn't turned all the way down, and that the low-pass filter isn't fully closed — or load a patch like Plain Field.
Why does iOS mention the microphone?
OP-SYNTH never records audio. iOS requires that entry whenever an app starts an audio engine.
Purchase & devices
Do I need to buy it again for Mac or iPhone?
No. OP-SYNTH is a single purchase for iPhone, iPad and Mac with the same Apple Account.
Which systems are supported?
iOS / iPadOS 17 or later and macOS 14 or later. iPhone runs in landscape; foldable iPhones also use the large inner display.
Still stuck?
Email service@blacktext.de. Please mention your device, system version, the OP-SYNTH version (App Store page) and the controller you use.
